Andrew Gilmour
Principal Economist
The Economist Group
Andrew Gilmour is an economist with over 30 years of experience in progressively more senior management roles in banking, the International Monetary Fund, and the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). He started his career in consulting at the Commodities Research Unit, before moving on to the EIU where, after taking a couple of years out to work as an economist with the Caribbean Development Bank (via an UK Overseas Development Institute Fellowship scheme), he became Director for the MENA region. He then moved on to the IMF where he became a Deputy Division Chief in the Africa Department, before embarking on a career in banking, first as Deputy (effectively Co-) Chief Economist at Samba Financial Group (a large Saudi bank) and then, from 2018-2021, as Chief Economist at Arab Banking Corporation (rebranded Bank ABC). A brief stint as a civil servant in HM Treasury was enough to persuade him that he preferred to be back in the commercial world and applying his skills and experience in country analysis with the EIU. Andrew studied economics at the School of Oriental and African Studies and has an Msc from the University of Reading. In his spare time, he likes to play tennis and enjoys fly fishing.
