Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim

Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)
Dr. Ahmed Farouk Ghoneim was appointed in October 2024 as the first CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). He is a Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University, and a research fellow at the Economic Research Forum. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany and a Master’s degree in Development Economics from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands. His expertise includes trade policy, regional trade integration, the multilateral trading system, the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the economics of intellectual property. He has numerous internationally published research papers in political economy and trade policy, and he serves as an adjunct professor at Egyptian and foreign universities. He also consults for international organizations, including the World Bank, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the Arab League. Dr. Ghoneim has held several executive roles, including advising Egypt’s Ministers of Trade and Industry on foreign trade and international agreements. At the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University, he served as deputy head of the Economics and Financial Research Center and as head of the European Studies Center. From 2014 to 2018, he was Egypt’s Cultural Counselor and Head of the Educational Mission in Germany, Austria, and ten other countries. From August 2020 to October 2024, he was the first CEO of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC). He also serves as an advisor to the Minister of Investment and Trade on foreign trade issues.
